Recipe: Apple and caramel French toast

This tasty and sweet treat is perfect for a dessert or just a snack. If you have more time, consider making the caramel sauce from scratch (it can be kept in the fridge for up to a month, allowing you to use it in other dishes too).

Ingredients for apple and caramel French toast

  • 2 slices of thick bread (you can use any kind but we went with a crusty white)
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 30ml milk
  • 1/2 sweet apple, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 tspn cinnamon
  • 3 tbspn caramel sauce
  • 4 tspn unsalted butter

Instructions for making apple and caramel French toast

  1. Whisk the eggs, milk and cinnamon in a bowl until smooth
  2. Pour onto a plate or shallow bowl and set aside
  3. Add half of the butter to a pan and melt over medium-low heat
  4. Add the sliced apples and 2 tablespoons of caramel sauce
  5. Stir and cook until the apples are tender
  6. Remove the apples from the pan and turn the heat up to medium
  7. Add the rest of the butter to the pan and melt it
  8. Coat each side of the bread in the egg mixture then place in the pan
  9. Fry on each side until golden brown
  10. To serve, set the apples on top of the French toast and drizzle with caramel sauce
