Recipe: Tomato ketchup

It’s really easy to make your own ketchup and much better for you and the kids too.

You’ll need the following:

  • 5lbs fresh tomatoes
  • 3 apples
  • 1 and 3/4 cups white vinegar
  • 8oz onions
  • 1tsp white pepper
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • 4 cloves chopped garlic
  • 3 tsps salt
  • 2 cups sugar

Then just core the apples and chop them up roughly along with the tomatoes and onions before popping them in a large pot with all the other ingredients. Bring the contents to the boil and the simmer for about an hour, stirring regularly as the sauce thickens. Blend until smooth and bottle. Simple as that!

Now you’ve got the perfect accompaniment to your burgers and chips, hot dogs and even steak. It’s also great for adding to your Worcestershire sauce and mayonnaise to make the perfect seafood sauce to top your prawns and crayfish. In fact, you’ll probably wonder why you ever stocked up on the shop-bought variety of tomato ketchup. Not only will you taste the difference, but your own concoction will contain less sugar than standard supermarket brands. And now that you’ve got the recipe nailed, you can work on your own variation and even leave the consistency a bit rougher, adding extra ingredients to make a great pasta sauce.
